What is Peer Support?

What is Peer Support?

Peer support services are specialized services designed for individuals with mental illness or substance use disorders, as well as their caregivers and families. These services focus on promoting resiliency, recovery, self-determination, and well-being through activities that enhance knowledge, skills, and connections within a supportive peer relationship. Peer support is individualized and recovery-focused, helping individuals and families address their needs, navigate systems, and achieve wellness goals.

Key components of peer support include fostering hope, developing life skills, advocating for informed choice, and providing culturally inclusive care. These services may occur in various locations to meet the needs of the individual or family and are delivered by certified peer supporters. They also emphasize trauma-informed care, cultural humility, and partnership with individuals and families, ensuring a holistic approach to recovery and wellness.
